The protection of water as a public good will be the most important task that we as a society must strive for both globally and nationally. This applies all the more in view of the effects and consequences of the climate crisis, such as heavy rainfall, drought and falling groundwater levels, which also present Germany with major challenges in dealing with water. This is why water must be regulated according to principles that allow it to be used sensibly, distributed fairly and handled responsibly in order to preserve it in the best quality for nature and future generations.
5 principles
The Blue Community is a civil society initiative that campaigns for the protection of water as a public good. It pursues 5 principles:

the human right to water and basic sanitation

water as a public good

tap water before bottled water

protection of water bodies and groundwater
5
international networking
A community, university and school can take care of this. Blue Communities are supported by civil society and NGOs, but public water suppliers are also part of the movement. This makes it low-threshold and makes it possible to act from below and independently of political parties. The Blue Community movement can therefore be seen as a concrete solution and response to water privatization.

We would like to shape Neustrelitz together with you! On our strolls to a favorite place in Neustrelitz of your choice, we talked about your visions for a sustainable water culture in the region.
The future of our water
The event series “The future of our water” has been running since 2022, inviting experts to talk about important and current topics relating to water. It is a popular event that is always very well received with 40-70 visitors. After the presentation, a dialog between experts and participants is invited. The series of events aims to increase awareness and knowledge, as well as to jointly consider how the city can integrate these topics into its own urban development.
The evening will be accompanied musically by musicians from Neustrelitz. In this way, science and culture come together in one evening.
