For greater water awareness at the DIALOGMUSEUM Frankfurt am Main
Opening 14. April 2026
Duration 15. April bis 27. Juni 2026
Long Night of Museums 25. April 2026
Who is water to you?
We explore these and other questions in the exhibition WasserWesen (Water Creatures) with all our senses. We invite you to immerse yourself in a sensory world—without any visual barriers. Led by blind and visually impaired guides, the DIALOGMUSEUM allows you to discover the invisible and experience water in a completely new way.
The focus is not on water as a commodity, but as an entity. Visitors aged 6 and above experience the exhibition by touching, listening, and feeling: an inclusive change of perspective that redefines our relationship with this elixir of life.
The 4 chapters of the exhibition
1
Water beings
Human connection, character, and sensuality.
2
Main Under
A sound installation by Julia Mihály.
3
Water & City
Water cycle and rainwater management in Frankfurt.
4
Water & Blindness
Dialogue with the guides about the exhibition and their realities of life..
Art meets science
The exhibition combines artistic visions with scientific depth. One highlight is the installation by Anoosh Sophie Werner, which uses the “drip painting method” developed by Theodor Schwenk (1967).
From drop to tactile image
Inspired by sounds, the artist examined samples from the Main River, its source rivers, and Frankfurt’s tap water. Under the guidance of the Institute for Flow Sciences, drip paintings were created that show how intact the natural mobility of water is. This method does not provide mere numbers, but rather a holistic snapshot of water quality.
These images were translated into 3D-printed templates. This creates three-dimensional, tactile water images. Visitors can directly feel the “essence of the river” and understand environmental influences through pure sensory experience.

Reflection and encounter
Accompanying texts and reflection questions invite visitors to reconsider their own connection to the element of water. The inclusive teaching methods are based on workshops conducted by the museum team and are inspired by Schwenk’s work and the book Wasser bewegt (Water Moves).
WasserWesen opens the senses, creates encounters, and makes the invisible tangible.
